Approvals

Glendell Continued Operations Project is a State Significant Development (SSD).

Project assessment

The project requires:

  • development consent under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act)
  • approval under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The development application was lodged with the New South Wales Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) in December 2019. The accompanying Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was on public exhibition from 11 December 2019 until 14 February 2020.

A total of 359 submissions were received during the public exhibition period from community members, interest groups and government agencies on the project EIS.

All of the submissions were considered and responded to through Response to Submissions (RTS) reports (Part A and Part B), which have been completed and submitted to the DPIE for their assessment and recommendations to the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission (IPC). The IPC is the consent authority for the project.

Project status

The project has undergone assessment by the DPIE, who have prepared an Assessment Report and handed the project over to the IPC to commence a process that will end with a determination. We anticipate the IPC will complete their assessment and make a determination of the project in the second quarter of 2022.

What is being assessed?

Comprehensive technical assessments have been completed identifying the potential impacts of the project and recommending measures to minimise and manage potential impacts. The project design has been informed by many of the studies to ensure impacts are mitigated as far as reasonably and feasibly possible.

As part of the EIS, a detailed Social Impact Assessment (SIA) was prepared in accordance with the assessment guideline for State significant mining, petroleum production and extractive industry development adopted by the New South Wales Government in 2017.

The SIA is about identifying, assessing and effectively managing the social impacts that may be associated with the project, and identifying opportunities to enhance the benefits of the project.
